Little 10-month-old Charlie Gard was born with an extremely rare genetic disorder called mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome. It ultimately leads to organ failure and brain damage, and doctors say Charlie has zero chance of survival.
But the parents want to fight for their son’s life, anyway. As ANY parent would.
They found an experimental treatment in the U.S. that gives Charlie a chance, and they even raised a whopping $1.6 million to fund this last-gasp opportunity.
Unfortunately, in the world of socialized medicine (the Gards are residents of London), you don’t actually have any control in the health – and life – of your loved ones.
The hospital refused to release Charlie and the parents lost in court, too. The judge said Charlie had to die, as it was the humane thing to do.
This is what happens when you give the government an insane amount of power they should never, ever have.
This, of course, robs the parents of any power they should have over their own child and social media has been abuzz with the controversy ever since the news broke
